About the Nomination Process

Porto Charities will recognize a Parish, a Principal, an Educator, a Peer Mentor and an Employee with a disability with the Porto Charities' Inclusion Award. Nomination submissions are open to all individuals in the Diocese of Arlington and the selection will be made by Porto Charities' Executive Committee and the 2023 Porto Charities' Steering Inclusion Awards Committee.

All nominations must be received by April 21tst, 2023, 10:00 pm.

Nominating criteria:

Individuals are invited to submit nominations through this website by April 21st, 2023, 10:00pm.
Contact information is required to verify entries.
Nominators may be contacted by phone or email if the judging committee requires additional information about their nominees.

Award criteria:

An individual must be currently working/volunteering in the Diocese of Arlington, VA. For the Pastoral Leadership Award, the Parish must be in the Diocese of Arlington, VA.
An individual/parish will be deemed worthy of the award for using their role (Pastor, Principal, Educator, Peer Mentor, Employee with ID/DD) to make a positive contribution to inclusive education or employment in the Diocese of Arlington.
Nominees may be asked to participate in an interview which may include a site visit.
The recipient will be presented with the Porto Charities's Inclusion Award in their respective category at the Inclusion Awards to be held on June 24th, 2023 at Bishop O'Connell High School.

Pastoral Leadership Award

Parish

Parishes that are leading examples in answering the Bishop’s call for inclusion. These parishes are committing significant resources to ensuring that their schools can support their students with disabilities. These parishes make it a priority to improve the lives of their children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Catalyst Award

Principal or School Administrator

School administrators who are setting policies to increase access for students with disabilities in their Catholic schools and whose leadership embraces and fosters a culture of inclusion and belonging. These school administrators lead a school that currently serves students with intellectual and developmental disabilities whose educational needs are being met.

St. Margaret of Castello Award

Educator

For teachers who embrace the Bishop’s call for inclusion, create a classroom where all belong, expect success, and strive to help all students learn to their highest God-given potential. These teachers may be General Ed teachers, or Special Education teachers and aids who are making a positive impact in the learning experience of children with disabilities in our Catholic Schools.

St. Timothy Award

Peer Mentor (current or former student)

Named after St. Timothy, companion and helper to St. Paul, this award goes to a current or former peer mentor from one of the four diocesan high schools (PVI, DJO, BI, JPG). This person has a personal and long-standing commitment to accompany those in the disability community and help make academic and social life accessible.

St. Andre Bessette Award

Employee with ID/DD

Named after St. Andre Bessette, doorkeeper of the abbey of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, this award goes to an individual with intellectual or developmental disabilities who is working or serving in the Diocese of Arlington. By the example of their service, this person is opening doors for a more inclusive and just world.
