Community Engagment

Overview

Inclusive Catholic schools and inclusive workplaces come from communities that recognize the value of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively work to know and love them. This is the good ground where belonging can take root.

Our community engagement opportunities aim to create spaces of belonging and connection that are accessible to all. Learn more about how you can connect with others through Porto Charities.

PortoPartner

Events

PortoPartner events give everyone a chance to participate in inclusive experiences and service projects, regardless of ability.  We partner with CYOs, Scouting Troops, and Youth/young adult groups from parishes in the Arlington Diocese. These events provide a welcoming space for children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, where all can build relationships and strengthen bonds within the community. â€‹

Inclusion in Action

Webinar Series

Porto Charities launched webinars to the public in 2021, with the aim of providing resources for families, educators, and employers. Whether you are a teacher, an employer, a parent, or a self-advocate, you will find something to interest you here. Our video library keeps growing every year. At Porto Charities, we are creating a more inclusive future one webinar at a time.

Monthly Parent

Coffees

What better way to connect with other parents than over a cup of coffee! In 2025, Porto Charities launched monthly parent coffees to facilitate connections with other parents raising children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Parents find camaraderie, resources, comfort, and encouragement, as well as share experiences with other families in the Diocese of Arlington.

Traditional

Celebrations

Raising awareness while having fun: Porto hosts events exclusively to bring our Porto community together to celebrate our loved ones with disabilities, while raising awareness of inclusion. Currently, Porto Charities celebrates an annual Christmas Party with over 150 people from around our Diocese.

Additionally, Porto Charities partners with the Office of Respect Life at the Chancery in Diocese of Arlington to co-host the Bishop's Annual Mass for Respect Life and Persons with Disabilities.

Annual Conference

on Disability

In 2022 Porto Charities created the 1st and only conference on disability in the Diocese of Arlington titled “From Inclusion to Belonging." Since then, it has focused on different topics such as inclusion in parishes and the mental health of individuals with disabilities and their caregivers. We provide a learning opportunity for parents, pastors, educators, and directors of religious education about how individuals with disabilities can go from being included to full belonging. We partner with the Diocese of Arlington, Diocesan High Schools, and the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) to co-host these conferences.
