Founded in 2009, Porto Charities is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to building a culture of true belonging for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities by increasing their educational, employment, and community engagement opportunities within the Catholic Diocese of Arlington.

 

Through grants and professional development for educators, Porto Charities supports the expansion of inclusive education in Catholic schools. To date, Porto Charities has awarded more than $1.7 million in grants to Diocesan schools serving students with disabilities, with additional funding providing teacher training and scholarships.

 

The commitment to helping individuals with disabilities extends into the workforce. Through the PortoWorks initiative, Porto Charities has facilitated meaningful employment for more than 25 young adults with disabilities at schools, parishes, the Chancery, and businesses in the Diocese of Arlington.

The impact of Porto Charities extends beyond the classroom and the workplace. The organization is committed to engaging the entire diocese by fostering fellowship opportunities for individuals of all abilities. Through advocacy efforts, it seeks to educate the community on the inherent dignity of the human person and the unique gifts and needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. ​
