God's Highway
Isaiah paints a beautiful picture of the Kingdom of God for those who are “redeemed." In verse eight, Isaiah says, “A highway will be there, called the holy way.” This verse really stood out to me; A way, a highway called the holy way, or God’s way.
On God’s highway, we make our way to holiness by following His plan for His Glory. Then miracles happen, and our prayers are answered, and joy and gladness naturally follow. But, in the second reading, James instructs us to be patient. It is Advent. We are waiting. And there is more, James says, be patient with each other! He says, “Do not complain about one another.” God’s timing is perfect, not mine. The speed bumps, the potholes, the people who make me slam on the brakes have a purpose! Maybe the obstacles in my way are a call to pray for the Holy Spirit to guide my way.
Then, in Matthew’s gospel, we hear that John the Baptist, while in prison, had doubts about whether Jesus was the Messiah. John goes so far as to send his disciples to Jesus to ask, “Are you the one or should we look for another?” (Mt. 11:3).
Jesus responds in the most awesome way. He does not leave John in confusion; he sends eyewitnesses to John to describe the miracles they have seen. Jesus was very clear and gave John facts and evidence! Then Jesus reminds us (the “crowds”) that Yes! John was a prophet, and His “messenger” sent to prepare the way before Him. And there it is again… “the way.”
Because John behaved differently from those around him, he was showing us and teaching us that we too will need to be different, act differently, and challenge the
norms to follow that “Highway” to the Kingdom. Then Jesus promises the extraordinary in verse 11, “yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he (John the Baptist).”
Jesus was clear with John. Believe in me. Here are the eyewitness accounts… Believe and be saved! It appears Jesus is reaching out to John to say, “John, you have been doing and saying the right stuff… trust and believe! And to those of us who live after John the Baptist and after the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus, He has given very clear and reassuring truths in the Word. So, when we doubt, like John the Baptist, we can lean into the facts recorded in the Gospels and remember the highway to the kingdom is full of joy, gladness, singing, and abundance. At times we need to wait, slow down, and contemplate whether we are following God’s plan or letting the shiny objects in our peripheral vision distract us. When we hit a speed bump or get a flat tire, we are reminded to pray, prepare, and keep God’s will in focus. Then his Kingdom will come.
